GagaMarkets is the best, most visual tool for following the world's stock market indexes on your desktop. Here's how to use the program.

Installing GagaMarkets

You will have downloaded a file called GagaMarkets.dmg. Double-click this file to mount the disk image, then, if you don't see a window, click the GagaMarkets icon in the Finder window sidebar. You'll see this:

At the left is the program's license in a PDF file. At the right is a web-link file that will take you to the program's documentation (this web page). And, in the center, you'll find the GagaMarkets preference pane.

To install GagaMarkets, double click the GagaMarkets.prefPane file. When you do so, System Preferences will open, and you'll see a dialog like this:

If you only want to install GagaMarkets for your user, or if you are not an administrator, leave the first option checked. If you want all of your Mac's users to be able to use GagaMarkets, and have an administrator's user name and password, check the second option. Then click Install. If you chose to install for all users of your Mac, you'll be prompted to enter your administrator's user name and password.

Using GagaMarkets

After you install the GagaMarkets, the preference pane will open and you can change the program's settings. If you want to change these settings at any other time, just open System Preferences and click the GagaMarkets icon.

To turn on GagaMarkets and start monitoring stock market indexes, check Monitor these indexes. To turn the program off, just uncheck this box.

Some countries only have a single stock market index, but many offer a number of indexes you can choose from. To monitor a different index from the one displayed, click on the name of an index next to a country's name and choose the one you want to monitor for that country (if more than one is available).

GagaMarkets has several display options. You can choose between 2D and 3D display; 2D is a flat world map projection and 3D is a rotating globe. If you choose 3D display, you can choose an Earth Rotation Speed from a popup menu.

You can choose to display meridians (latitude and longitude), and you can choose to have GagaMarkets display your desktop picture, or hide it. Try out all of these settings and check your desktop to see which you prefer.

GagaMarkets displays different colors to show the current stock market indexes:

down by more than 5%
down by more than 2%
in negative territory, but less than 2% off
unchanged
a gain of less than 2%
a gain of more than 2%

If a color displays translucent, this means that the market is currently closed in that country.

That's all there is to it. Use GagaMarkets to keep track of market trends, but make sure to take any necessary blood pressure or anxiety medication you may need as the markets rise and fall.
